Born into a wealthy Frankfurt family, he was educated at the Universities of Wiesbaden, Jena, and Bonn and earned a degree in philology in 1827. Returning to Frankfurt, he became a teacher at the Bunsen Institute, which was noted for its radicalism. Lindheimer (1801 – 1879) was a German botanist and political activist, and had to leave Germany after participating in the unsuccessful Frankfurt Putsch insurrection of 1833.
